Is a career in real estate for you? Be careful who you ask that question to because it may be very hard to get an honest answer. You see the industry thrives on recruiting new people. It has become a numbers game and not a quality game. In the eyes of many industry professionals whoever has the most sales people wins. So if you ask a manager or broker if this career is for you the odds are he or she will say a resounding yes. Many offices turn people over at a pretty steady rate and have a constant recruiting program. Most franchised offices spend more time and effort on recruiting than anything else.
The Bible says "An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips". A career in real estate is not something anyone should jump into with out doing a lot of research and an honest assessment of your own abilities. In the course of doing this you may not get a lot of honest answers. Firstly from those in the industry who just want to get you licensed so you can start paying your share of office expenses. These operations make their money by getting as many people paying them as possible each month. These expenses include desk fees, admin fees, advertising fees, material fees etc. Everything is marked up to the sales person and that's how the company makes their money. As long as you pay your monthly fees they could care less if you ever make any money. No offence to anyone here just an observation as I see it. Be careful. The last thing you want to do is jump from company to company looking for some magic pill. Every company will tell you they are the best. When you start out find a company where the monthly costs are the lowest and don't worry about the split. It is all about keeping expenses as low as possible while you learn the business.
Your priority should be low costs and after that experienced knowledgeable training. Many managers are managing because they couldn't make it selling. If the person doing the training has never successfully sold real estate do not go with that company. The facts are any company will hire you but only you will make your self successful. Any company can teach you the basics but only a top producer can teach you to become a top producer. A career in real estate will only become a career if you are prepared to commit to doing the following.
Work evenings and week ends, do a lot of work and spend a lot of time that you may not get paid for, spend money to make money, work hard and except the fact that in real estate you are only working when you are talking to someone about listing or selling a house. You can not sell or have a career in real estate today unless you are prepared to master technology and the internet. Your spouse has to except that long hours is the reality of a career in real estate and support you. Real estate can be rewarding and fun but a career in real estate is a demanding career and competition is everywhere today. Good Luck if you decide to take the plunge and hopefully I've given you a kiss on the lips to help you on your way.
